The Whitefish Chain offers a wide variety of recreation through all of Minnesota seasons. There are a number of lakeside restauraunts with a good selection of table fare.
Whitefish Lake is the site of a major DNR walleye egg take station. It is located where the Pine River enters Upper Whitefish. The lake is stocked annually, with at least 5,000,000 walleye fry being put back into the lake from the eggs collected at the walleye trap. Whitefish is also stocked in even numbered years with fingerlings. The average length was 16.2" and 78% of the fish were 12" or larger.
Northern pike were sampled in relatively high numbers. Most of these fish were on the small side with an average length of 20.6" and only 10% measuring 24" or larger. Lakes in this part of the state have a new northern pike regulation enacted in 2018: possession limit of 10 with not more than 2 over 26". All from 22"-26" must be immediately released. Please refer to the current Minnesota Fishing Regulations for additional information.
Largemouth bass electrofishing was done across the Whitefish Chain. Average length was 13.5". Five smallmouth bass were also netted while electrofishing. All but one were over 17".
Panfish results were mixed. Black crappie size was good, with 58% of the fish measuring 8" or larger. Bluegill numbers were good but only 2% of the fish were 7" or larger with an average length of 4.4".
Tullibee and lake whitefish were caught in average numbers. Both are important forage species in the lake, along with yellow perch.
