Bass currently seem like one of the better species to fish for in Borden, with both Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass present. Both were sampled by night electrofishing in a recent survey. The average Largemouth was 10.2", with fish ranging from 4.9" to 19.7". The Smallmouth Bass were a bit larger, with an average size of 15.3" and fish ranging from 9.1" to 19.3".
Northern Pike numbers were average for this type of lake. Most of the fish were below the 22-26" protected slot .
Walleyes are not stocked into Borden Lake, but numbers were still average. Size was decent too, with an average length of 21.5" and all of the fish measuring over 14".
Panfish have historically offered great opportunities on Borden. In fact, new regulations were adopted in 2021 that reduce the daily possession limit to five Sunfish and five Crappies. While both were still caught in average numbers, 48% of Black Crappies were 8" or larger and only 14% of Bluegills were 7" or larger. Larger Black Crappies, up to 13.1", were measured while bass electrofishing and in our spring panfish assessment (separate survey report), showing that they are still present in the system.
